Decades of research and development have made Prairie Plant Systems Inc. a leading supplier of fruit trees to orchards across Canada and around the world. This commitment to excellence continues today, demonstrated in the uncompromising quality of every plant PPS grows and sells. Whether you have ordered 10 plants or 10,000, every one is inspected before shipping to make sure it meets rigorous quality standards.
PPS was established in 1988 with the goal of developing fruit trees hardy enough to survive and thrive in the harsh Canadian climate. Initial research efforts focused on the development of micropropagation protocols and in-vitro rooting techniques for the saskatoon berry tree, a hardy fruit-bearing tree native to Saskatchewan, Canada. This program successfully produced disease-free trees, critical for the development of commercial saskatoon berry orchards.
As a result of continued research efforts, PPS soon had 29 different plant varieties in culture. These included apples, plums, raspberries, cherries, cutleaf birches, miniature roses, as well as several medicinal plant species. Its demonstrated success and cutting edge plant technologies have made PPS an attractive partner, and it has provided services on contract to organizations including the Plant Biotechnology Institute of the National Research Council, Agriculture Canada, Cameco and the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan.
A joint venture with the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Co. of Flin Flon, Man. led PPS to establish its first biological underground growth chamber in 1990. This facility, located 365 metres underground, brought a new level of control over PPS’ growth environment as well as media attention and international recognition. It also presented an opportunity for PPS to diversify its operations with a focus on plant based pharmaceuticals.
In December 2000, PPS won a five-year, $5.5 million contract to supply medicinal cannabis to thousands of Canadians by way of Health Canada. As Health Canada's medical marijuana program grew, so did PPS' space requirements, and in 2009 it moved its operations from the Flin Flon mine to a state of the art above-ground facility. PPS continues to produce medical cannabis products today, which are sold through its wholly-owned subsidiary, CanniMed.
Despite its diversified operations, PPS remains squarely focused on producing superior fruit trees and looks forward to delivering its exceptional products to you.
